Pertame School

The Pertame School is a community-led language revival program empowering Pertame Elders to pass their language and cultural knowledge onto the next generation. Pertame is a severely endangered language, with less than 30 Elder fluent speakers still alive. Without serious action, Pertame will be lost within the next generation.

The Pertame School is a community-led language revival program empowering Pertame Elders to pass their language and cultural knowledge onto the next generation. We are raising children as full Pertame people within their language, culture and knowledge systems, nurtured by a connected community support network.

The Pertame School launched the first and only total immersion Language Nest in Australia, modelled off best practise Indigenous language revival programs in New Zealand, Hawaii and North America. The Pertame Ngetya Untya (Language Nest) is a immersion playgroup for Pertame children from birth to 5 years old and their parents to be immersed within their language, culture and community. English is left at the front door and our children are totally surrounded by their Indigenous language so they can be raised naturally as first language speakers once again. We are fulfilling is our children's birth right to speak their Indigenous language as their first language, just as our ancestors once did.

Our Pertame community feels touched by the incredible support the PM Foundation has given to our program. We deeply appreciate the thoughtfulness of their approach to giving, allowing us to offer our Pertame community leaders meaningful, secure and multi-year employment within our program. Thank you PM for believing in our grassroots, community-led organisation, and proving the seeding funds to raise our babies as Pertame speakers for the first time in 3 generations.
