Murrup
Murrup is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation that supports First Nations children and young people, and their families, through their early years, school journey and beyond.
Our journey started in 2007 as the Cathy Freeman Foundation. In 2022 we changed our name to Community Spirit Foundation and then, in 2024, we adopted the Wurundjeri word for ‘spirit’ and became Murrup.
We partner with four of Australia’s most remote First Nations communities – Woorabinda and Palm Island in Queensland, and Galiwin’ku and Wurrumiyanga in the NT.
We believe that First Nations Peoples have the right to self-determination. But, in order to create the future of their dreams, young people must have the freedom to choose; freedom from barriers; and freedom from racism.
Our place-based programs are aligned with education systems because education really does change lives. But we know that children and young people can face barriers beyond their control that impact their attendance and participation at school and fulfilling their potential after they finish.
We take a holistic approach, and support young people and their families:
in the home
in the neighbourhood and school environment
by navigating systems and services
And, most importantly, our programs are delivered by 100% local staff, who ensure cultural security and apply a local lens.
Murrup thanks the PMF Foundation for supporting our journey.
